Halloween Happenings

Believe it or not, we are already receiving calls from visitors who are asking about Halloween events in Door County.  Last year we experimented with a Halloween Icon on the front page of DoorCounty.com and it became obvious that we were onto something here.  If you are planning – or know of any - Halloween events planned for the last week-end in October,  please take a moment to complete our Online Event Calendar submission form at: http://www.doorcountychamber.org/coe.htm to let us know.

If that isn’t convenient for you, simply contact Deb Kamark at the Chamber Office/Visitor Center.

Deb can be reached via phone by calling your local Member Hotline number – (920)746-6663 or 868-3521 and entering ext. 807.  Or, via e-mail at: phil@doorcounty.com

On behalf of everyone, here at the Chamber, I would like to extend our thanks to those of you who took the time to share your thoughts and concerns at last week’s Listening Session.   However, I haven’t heard a peep from the other 830 of you and, I would like to know where you stand on issues facing our Chamber.

Self Check

Have you taken your owner or employee “hat” off lately and looked around your place of business through the eyes of a visitor?   The end of Summer is a good time to make sure you haven’t become immune to the small repairs and the deeper cleaning that gets put off during the heat of the Summer.   Especially in public restrooms.  It’s not enough to drag a mop across the floor or swirl some cleaner in the bowl - if there is one thing a customer will remember FOREVER, it’s the condition of your restroom.   And, don’t just look at the floor, have you looked at your exhaust fans lately?  Are all your tiles in place?  If you’ve lost a tile – with no replacement in sight, at least level it off with a dollar’s worth of grout.  Making a restroom available to the public is a necessary evil but don’t underestimate the power of its condition.

Nothing boosts the level of confidence a customer has in you – like a well cared for bathroom.  In fact, you might as well think of your bathroom as the “smile” of your establishment.  If you only “rinsed your mouth” all summer, but didn’t brush or floss - because you were “too busy” - what kind of impression would you make?  It takes effort but it’s worth it.  Chances are, if your bathroom has disgusted a customer, you have probably lost them for life.

Another common problem is the “creeping grime”.  This is that black oily grime that builds up on the edges of doors, light switches and outer corners.  Personally, I have tried just about every kind of spray cleaner I could get my hands on but, nothing works like good old fashion Baking Soda.  If I had a nickel for every time I was told that Baking Soda cleans almost everything, I’d be a very wealthy man but, Baking Soda doesn’t come in a spray bottle so, I rarely think about it.  Last week, I was fighting some stains with a small damp cloth touched to a little Baking Soda in a dish and I was so impressed at the effortless cleaning power that I decided to try it on the “black creep” AND IT WORKED!  In fact, it worked so well that it only took a few minutes to brighten all the doors and light switches I could find!  Baking Soda is an awesome cleaner because it neutralizes the molecules needed to make the grime cling.  Additionally, it’s abrasive enough to help remove tough stains but soft enough to break down before it can scratch anything else.  For additional uses, check out: http://www.armandhammer.com/basics/

I think that’s all for now.  Please check the members’ site for the latest updates, information and member news.

Let me know how I can help.

Sincerely,

Phil
