Cherryland Airport Expansion – why is the airport important to your business

A couple years ago the County of Door and the State of Wisconsin funded a study to assess the need for improvements at our local Cherryland Airport.  One of the major recommendations to come out of this study was the need to lengthen the runway from the current 4,600 feet to at least 5,000 feet to accommodate the increasing number of jets that are using the airport.  This length is the minimum required for many of  these planes.  The study identified several options to address this need and recommended a preferred option.  The estimated cost to implement the plan is $ 10 million.  Even with 80 % grant funding  from the State this will be a costly project for the County.

The only way the County can justify this expenditure is to realize significant benefits to the public.  One of the most important ways the airport benefits the public is to improve the local business climate and the general economy of the county.  Some of the ways the airport helps business include the following:

  1. The airport is an essential part of the transportation infrastructure that serves existing and prospective new residents and businesses in the County.

  2. The airport facilitates the retention and expansion of the local tax base and jobs from businesses that use the airport in their business,  i.e. service customers, receive visiting customers, ship products, transport employees to meetings and work sites, etc.

  3. The airport  serves  many visitors and tourists that vacation here or are seasonal residents of the County and supports the significant local tourism economy.

Before the County Airport and Parks Committee recommends any action to implement the plan they would like to hear from the business community regarding the need for airport improvements and how the airport benefits local businesses.  Please help us answer these questions.

You can help by sharing your reason(s).   Simply e-mail a brief statement regarding how the airport is important to your business, to: kraymore@dcwis.com before September 5th and we will tabulate this response and share it with the committee.

Thank you.
